August 16, 1914 is accepted as the date of the formation of the Polish Legions. No less an Austrian authority than Archduke Friedrich, Commander in Chief of Austria-Hungarian Forces, confirmed their formation in an order dated 27 September of that year. The Polish Legions quickly expanded, and slight variations in the uniforms occurred among particular Legion units, especially concerning caps and head covers as well uniform insignia.

The uniforms were based on those of the Austrian-Hungarian Army. Epaulets and insignia of the K. und K. were removed.

Austrian Army uniforms were in widespread use in the Polish Legions, and were modified in several different ways.
