In February 1943, the Latvian SS Legion (SS-Lettische-Legion) was formed, in mid-1943 in the 1st Lettische-SS-Freiwillingen-Brigade, which was later developed in the 15th Division of Lettland.
At the end of 1943 also formed the 6th Assault Brigade, which in the spring of 1944 was transformed into 19 Dywizje Latvia.
Wehrmacht's Latvian volunteers wore shields on the right shoulder, and volunteers from Waffen- SS on the left shoulder.
