On 14 June 1940 Italy began its offensive in the Mediterranean aimed at defeating the British and recreating a new Roman Empire.

The Germans, as allies of the Italians, realized that they would eventually become involved in military operations in the Mediterranean Basin where England at the time was the dominant military power. The fact that the Italian Army lacked combat effectiveness was well known to the German High Command. As a result, the Germans began to research tropical uniforms.

Preliminary research and development were conducted by the Tropics Institute of the University of Hamburg.

The end result of the research was the German Afrika Korps M40 tropical uniform.

It is important to note that the institute’s work exclusively involved uniforms for the Afrika Korps (DAK).
