The helmet was modeled on the medieval kapalin helmet. It was inexpensive and easy to produce since it was stamped from a single piece of sheet steel. This simplified the production process and provided good protection against high impact debris in battle.
The Helmet was developed and patented in 1915 by Leopold John Brodie. From the inventor's name, it is also called the Brodie helmet. The Germans called it “Tellerhelm” since resembled a deep dish.
